The Fairview Fire District has a unique tax situation. The district is full of schools, colleges, mental health facilities, places of worship, centers for people with disabilities and other not-for-profit organizations. These places are all exempt from paying fire tax. Unfortunately, just because these places do not contribute to the tax levy does not mean that it does not cost money for the fire department to respond to these places. This means that the tax paying properties have to make up the difference for the tax exempt properties. The Board of Fire Commissioners, the District Chief, the firefighters' union, the volunteer company and a group of citizens are all working very hard together to try to solve this problem.
